The Department of Defense recently announced “Hack the Pentagon” program, a cyber security bug bounty program for the first time in the history of federal government. Only “vetted hackers”, those who are US citizen and willing to go through a background check, will be able to join this unique program. The pilot program is expected to launch in April. More details will be provided by then.

The question is what led DoD to launch this initiative? Well, last summer, the Office of Personnel Management revealed that the private information of more than 20 million people were stolen. Among those people were government workers who underwent background checks. You can read the OPM hack here. These attacks will only get worse and I think DoD has made the right decision to strengthen its security. This bounty program may lead other government agencies to start new initiatives.
